Heuristics vs. aesthetics: where they collide

Early thinking — collecting collisions as I encounter them.

Usability heuristics and visual elegance agree most of the time: clarity is beautiful, alignment is both. The interesting cases are the collisions — where making the interface prettier makes it measurably harder to use. A few I keep running into:

Working position

When the collision is real, the heuristic wins for tools and the aesthetic wins for moments — onboarding, marketing, celebration. The mistake is letting "moment" design language colonize the daily-use surface. The other resolution: surface the trade-off early and decide it deliberately, before the visual language is locked — the same lesson as specs as forcing functions.

To explore

Aesthetic-usability effect (pretty things are perceived as more usable — does this dissolve the collision or just delay the complaint?); density toggles as a cop-out vs. a legitimate resolution.
